I am not a health nut but this recipe is amazing – Strawberry Banana Smoothie
I used to dread running. I only did it to keep in shape for soccer. My college coach used to run us to the ground to prepare for the season. Ugh. Not fun.
About 10 years ago I began to love running. Call me crazy.
My husband and I got ourselves some fancy running shoes, a subscription to Runner’s World magazine, and some dry-fit Nike clothes. We downloaded a training schedule from the internet, and we set out to run our first half-marathon. It was in the wine country (Napa, CA) and they handed out wine samples in dixie cups at mile 10. Gross. Last thing I wanted on that HOT day was warm, red cabernet.
I did a few more half-marathons, and even a couple of FULL marathons (now you are legit in calling me crazy). During this time, I didn’t really pay special attention to my nutrition. I ate foods that I normally ate. I took Gu’s on long runs, and hydrated with Gatorade. The missing piece was recovery.
Once I began to drink a protein shake, made with vegan protein, I noticed a HUGE change. The soreness that was usually there after long runs was either less, or non-existent. I didn’t realize that when you run, and you’re hard on your muscles; they break down. Building them back up with protein within 30 min of exercise totally improves recovery. And then you’re ready to run again!
This strawberry banana smoothie is made with fresh fruit, frozen fruit, and my favorite vegan protein powder (I’ve tried quite a few!) Whip it up after a long run, and you’ll be good to go the next day. MMmmmm.
