Sometimes I put off trying something if it is a lot different from anything I have ever tried before. That was the case with Cauliflower Steak. But I gotta tell you, nothing could be simpler and easier—or as delicious–than this Cauliflower Steak with a Simple and Easy Brown Butter Sauce. Ummm, drizzled over it. I am talking about 1 vegetable, with a 1 ingredient Sauce. You are not going to believe it until you try it yourself.
I had been thinking about making a Cauliflower Steak for quite a while, but just didn’t get around to it. I imagine you do the same thing. Now that I have gotten around to it—“A Round Tuit!” and have found how delicious it is, I am wishing I had ventured into this sooner, because it is so easy and versatile. You can top the cauliflower steak with almost anything because it is like a blank canvas.
From the first that I heard of Cauliflower Steak, I was curious about it, and wondered how the cooking part was handled. But I was not curious enough to find out until recently. I have no idea what gave the spark to do it, but glad it happened! Talk about a quick hot side dish!
Well I was ready for something different from the standard side dish of baked or mashed potatoes, and I needed a choice that was low-glycemic. I usually fall back on green beans and broccoli, and/or a salad. But I was tired of those guys. I got to the point where I was ready for something different, but not complicated, and wouldn’t take too long to cook.
Enter Cauliflower Steak—really? How odd. How in the world do you cook that I wondered? I was used to boiling cauliflower or steaming it, but that didn’t sound like the method that would be used.
After seeing it on TV, I found out. But I wondered if it would be any good, for cauliflower isn’t usually the tastiest vegetable. When I have eaten it raw, I have always needed a very delicious dip to help the taste of it, like my favorite—ranch salad dressing made into a dip. I feel the same way about broccoli too.
So I thought, “What the heck. I am going to try it.” I got out my ovenproof skillet, rinsed, took the cauliflower and trimmed off the leaves and stem end, and cut a slice from it. Starting at the top, I cut a 1 inch slice from the center, all the way down and through the stem. There. I had my first slice. Then I cut another one from each side, which gave me 3.Depending on the size of your head of cauliflower, you might be able to get 2 more slices. Each slice can be divided into smaller portions, enough for a family of four or more. But in any case, you can always use what you have left over—and dip it into ranch dip, or your favorite dip!
So now it’s cut up and all you have to do is brush it with olive oil, sprinkle it with salt and pepper, brown it in an oiled hot skillet, then pop it into the oven to finish cooking! While it finishes cooking, melt 1 or 2 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until light brown. Voila—you have your butter sauce to drizzle over the cauliflower when you pull it out of the oven! Enjoy the nutty deliciousness over the cauliflower! Healthy never tasted so good!
